Step by Step
Add music and effects!
Now, the fun part of adding music, sound effects and even images and URLs (websites) to your podcast. Let’s start with some music. You’ll find this in the right hand area where the Media Browser was. If you don’t see All Effects, Jingles, Stingers, Sound Effects and Favorites, then click on the little “eyeball” button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Click on Jingles and you’ll get a list of genres, spend some time listening to them and pick one that suits your podcast. Drag it up to the Jingle Track in your Tracks area, below your voice track. It’s March in Chicago now and I’m sick of the cold, so I’m going with the Jingle called “Island Long” in the World genre section.
Now, your music and your voice start at the same time, which we probably don’t want, so let’s lasso – select your voice track segments and slide them to the right a bit, so the music plays for a few seconds before your voice starts. GarageBand automatically “ducks” the music under your voice when it starts, which is pretty cool.
If your voice track has some silence at the beginning of it before you start speaking though, GarageBand will duck the music too early, so go to the start of your voice track and edit out all of the silence before the first waveform hits as you start talking. Just click in the track right before your first word and drag to the left and then hit the delete button.
If you want to get really crazy, let’s add a sound effect just before your voice comes in. Just below Jingles in your Loop area is Stingers. Select that and look for Radio Station ID 02.
Drag that into the blank track area just under your voice track and the Jingle Track so that it ends just before your voice starts. Listen back to it to see if it times out properly. If not move the tracks around until you have the right amount of music before the sound effect, then the sound effect ends just in time for your voice to start.
Mixing your tracks
Now, to me, the sound effect isn’t loud enough over the music, so in the Stinger panel, drag the audio volume slider up about 3 or 4 db. (decibels). Listen and adjust until you like it.
Now we need to work on the music. Even though GarageBand automatically “ducked” the volume down when your voice comes in, we also don’t want to have the music play under our entire podcast. That’s called having “wall to wall” music. After a few seconds, we want to gradually fade the music out.
To do this you click on the little downward facing triangle next to the “lock” icon. If you hover your cursor over it, it should bring up a tip that says “View/Hide automation for track.” For people used to Final Cut Pro or Avid or other editing software, this allows you to “rubberband” the audio, or place keyframes in the timeline and have the audio change between the keyframes.
So we’re going to click on the bright blue line in the Automation Track of the Jingle Track at the point where we want it to start fading completely out and click again where we want it to be entirely faded out. Each click adds a little blue dot to the line. You can drag the second blue dot downwards. This will fade the audio out at that point.
If you want to, you can drag more music back to the end of your voice track and run through these steps kind of in reverse so that the music starts to fade up as you’re saying goodbye, then it plays out at full volume for a few seconds afterwards. I’ll let you fly solo on that part of the project.
The final really cool thing is that you can add still images to your audio podcast. Anyone watching on their computer or iPod will be able to see the images. You can drag these images from the desktop if you want, or open up the Media Browser (remember the little musical notation icon in the bottom right corner) and click on Photos at the top of the Media Browser to access your iPhoto albums.

They’re probably a little more than you may want to spend, but they sound great because the audio remains digital all the way to the speaker since it uses the USB out of your computer to feed it instead of the analog headphone jack.
