GarageBand Interface
Finally, we’re in the GarageBand interface. Let’s take just a moment to familiarize ourselves with what could be foreign territory for some of us. There are basically four areas of the screen.
The top left portion is where your audio tracks are. This is where you can see a roadmap of how each track is laid out compared to the others.
Below it is the “Audio Region” section. Actually this area changes a little depending on what tracks you have selected in the Track area. But basically this is where you can edit the tracks that are selected above. This is useful if you make a mistake and want to cut out a section and start over, or if you want to carefully position to sections of a track near each other.
Down the right hand side is the Media Browser. This gives you access to sound effects, jingles, music from your iTunes library (be careful of copyright!) and even photos from iPhoto.
Then at the very bottom of the screen are the playback controls. If you check out the three icons on the far right bottom corner, you’ll see an eyeball, an “i” and some musical notes. These icons change what’s in the Media Browser area.
If you click on the musical note icon, you get the Media Browser. Click on the “i” and you get track info and audio effects. Click on the “eye” and you get the Loop Browser. That’s the one we want for now. It’ll allow us to add jingle music and wacky sound effects like you might hear on the radio or in a TV promo. But we’ll come back to this in a few minutes.
Setting Prefences (DON’T RUN AWAY!)
Before we record, we have to go into the Preferences for GarageBand and tell it what kind of microphone we’re using. With your mic plugged in, go to the GarageBand menu, just to the right of the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and pull down to Preferences. (If you like using your keyboard, Preferences is command-,).
Select your Audio/Midi preferences and in the pulldown menu for Audio In, choose a microphone input.
System setting chooses whatever input your Mac’s Audio settings are set to already.
Built-in Microphone will be a choice on some Macs with iSight cameras and mics built in, and Built in Input is if you use the little mini-plug next to your headphone jack. My Preferences show a setting for AK5370 because I plugged in my USB headset mic, and that’s the name that my Mac assigns it. That will be my choice for a mic.
Recording your Podcast
This is where the rubber meets the road. It’s time to record your podcast. Pick the track you want to record to Track area in the top left corner. There are three preset tracks: Male Voice, Female Voice and Jingle. The two voice tracks are set up with some audio effects, like EQ and bass reduction and compression that are designed to make your voice sound best. If you were in a band in high school and love playing with guitar pedals and parametric equalizers, you can play with this stuff later. For now, let’s just pick a track – clicking on it highlights it blue – and start recording.
To start recording, you want to click on the round, red button at the bottom in the middle of the screen. You’ll see the track start to record. If you weren’t ready, don’t panic, you can just start when you’re ready and cut off the awkward beginning later on. Or you can hit the space bar to stop the recording and click on the little section you just recorded in the track area and hit “delete” on the keyboard. Make sure to move the red “playhead” back to the beginning of the track. Hitting Return, Z, or your keyboard’s Home button will jump the playhead back to the beginning.
Editing out Mistakes
So let’s say you recorded a few minutes of primo podcast chatter and then… you flubbed. You don’t want to just delete all that good stuff! Now what do you do? Just hit the space bar to stop recording and relax for a minute. We can fix this. That’s what the Audio region is for.
To navigate inside of either the track panel or the Audio Region panel is the same. To move the playhead, drag in the “timeline area” where the little “ticks” and time markers are.
Hitting the space bar plays and stops the playback. Also, very importantly, the Track area and Audio region both have separate zoom sliders so you can see the waveforms of your audio, which will help you make very precise edits.
In the Audio Region, move the playhead a little to the left of where you think you made the mistake. Listen and watch the playhead move over the audio waveforms. You’ll start to recognize where words and sounds are. When you know the waveform section that represents the last good thing you said, move your mouse into the middle area of the track in the Audio Region (not the upper Track region) and drag to the right, all the way to the end of the track. This selects this area. Now just hit the delete key to delete it.
Play back the section at the end to make sure you didn’t cut out too much. If you did, hit command-Z to undo your last action and try again. Keep at it until you have a clean edit. You may need to go back to an earlier section where it’s easier to make a clean edit – like at the end of a sentence. Once the bad stuff is cut out, then place the playhead at the end of that section and keep recording the rest of your podcast. You can hit the R button on your keyboard to start recording.
Keep going like this – recording and stopping to delete mistakes – until you’re done. Then go back and listen to the spots where you cut out mistakes and hear how well they transition from one edit to the next. If you need to, do some more editing in the Audio region and drag your edits tighter or looser in the Track region so they sound natural. Use the zoom tool to look closely at the edit points.

They’re probably a little more than you may want to spend, but they sound great because the audio remains digital all the way to the speaker since it uses the USB out of your computer to feed it instead of the analog headphone jack.
