iMovie Project: animated, narrated Slideshow with music
Create a slideshow in iMovie for a student project, presentation or unique gift idea!
Record the narration
Now, let’s record the narration for your slide show. Depending on the type of Mac you have this could be very easy. If you have a Mac with a built in microphone and camera – like most of the iMacs and MacBooks have, you’re all set. You can just basically talk into the computer screen. If you don’t have a Mac with a built in microphone, you may need to buy a little USB microphone. I got a USB headset mic with a copy of some transcription software I bought. USB mics are very cheap. Most of them should simply plug in to your USB port and they’ll automatically show up as a recording option in iMovie.
I have a MacBookPro with a built in mic. Normally, as Mr. Professional Editor guy, I would usually record using a $300 microphone plugged into my $200 audio interface, but for today, I’m just going to use the built in mic. To start recording, look along your icon bar in the middle of the screen and you’ll see an icon of a handheld microphone. Click that and you’ll see instructions in the viewer window (where your video usually is) about what to do. Basically a little “inspector” window pops up and you can choose which microphone you want to use. You can even plug an old microphone from an old tape recorder with a mini-jack right into your computer and choose that by selecting “Built in input” from the “Record From” pulldown menu in the “inspector. You can see the volume of your voice if you talk. You don’t want the meters to go totally into the red. Somewhere right in between is good. Adjust the sliders in the inspector window or change the volume of the way you speak or how close you are to the microphone. Then just click on the clip (click the middle of the clip from top to bottom) where you want to start your narration and then iMovie will count you down to where you need to start speaking. Hit the space bar to stop recording, or it will automatically stop when you run out of images in your slide show.
If you make a mistake, just stop recording with the space bar and find a spot where you can cut in to your old narration – like between sentences, and start recording again.
When you’re done recording your narration, you can double click on the little purple narration bar under your clips to get the inspector up. This is just like the inspector for the music clip you added earlier. Choose the audio option at the top of the inspector and you can adjust the audio level and fade ups and fade downs. You can also use the “Ducking” slider. What this does is “duck” the music track – or any other tracks, like audio from camcorder footage – down underneath the narration, so you can hear the narration better. The default percentage of ducking is a good place to start, but you can make the music louder or softer in comparison to your voice by using the Ducking slider in the inspector. Drag to the left and the music gets quieter, drag to the right and it gets louder.
Animating your photos
iMovie automatically adds the “Ken Burns” effect to your photos. I personally hate calling it the Ken Burns effect, but it’s now part of the moviemaking lexicon and it’s also the actual NAME of the effect inside of iMovie. If you go to the little “gear” icon in the bottom corner of any of the clips, you can select “Cropping, Ken Burns and Rotation” from the pulldown menu.
In the Viewer (upper right pane) you can see the image is now outlined by a green and red outline. The green outline shows the starting position of where you want to point the camera on the image. The red outline shows the ending position that you want the camera to be pointed at the end of the shot. A good starting position is at the “establishing” point, where you can see the whole image. Then you can have the camera zoom or pan or tilt to some smaller piece of detail in the image. If you have an image that is very tall and skinny, perhaps you’ll want to have the starting position be at the bottom and then tilt up until you see the top. Just click on the green box and drag it and position it where you want to start, then do the same for the red box where you want the shot to end. To preview your camera move, click on the little “play button between two lines” icon that’s just to the left of the Done button. If you like what you see, hit the Done button.
Sharing your slideshow (aka: exporting)
When you have all of your shots to the right length, with transitions and Ken Burns effects and your music and narration are just the right length, it’s time to export it so you can take it to school or show off to friends. iMovie has made this very simple with the Share menu at the very top of the computer screen. Choose Share and pick an option from the drop down menu. You can send your movie to iTunes so you can watch it on your appleTV or sync it to your iPod. You can burn a DVD of it with iDVD. You can upload it to YouTube or your mobileme account if you have one. You can also export it as a movie.
If you choose this option, another dialog box comes up offereing you several size choices, giving examples of what each size is good for. If you are going to put your movie on a USB drive and try to play it on a computer at school, I’d suggest choosing “Medium” as a good size. Another thing to do, is to TEST this movie before you have to get graded on it. Make sure your school computer can read the Quicktime movie that iMovie makes. Try it a day or two ahead.

‘m doing some animation videos in imovie and the files were to big, but they still were able to go into imovie. I had batched some images in photoshop to make the files smaller, but every time i drag them into iMovie, it won’t work. plus they won’t go into iPhoto, yet the bigger files would.

A project is only a text file with instructions or where to find all the components (events, music, stills) etc and how to put them all together. It will not work without them.To move a project to another computer you need to export you project (Share > Export movie..)That exported movie can then be put on an external drive and imported into iMovie on another computer as a new event. You can then continue editing.

I am done editing the first 5 minutes of my project for Video Production. It is saved as an iMovie project on my own Mac. Now, I must transfer the iMovie project from my own computer to the school’s computer so that I can finish editing it there.
