Fun iWeb Projects Using Widgets
New improved iWeb makes creating web pages a blast with special features.
So, now you’re on the web! Let’s try to make some other pages for your site. We can add a photos page, or a blog page. In a future lesson on this site, I’ll explain how to create your own audio podcasts. It’s really easy. Then you can have people listen to your podcasts on your website. For now, though, let’s do something easy. Let’s add a simple practice schedule and a map to our practice field.
There are two ways to make the practice schedule. One is to make it in iCal and then Publish your iCal Calendar. That won’t give you a visual reference, though. It just makes a web link that you can have people click on (if you have a MobileMe account) to see your iCal events. The other way is to simply make a text box or line of text for each practice. We’ll do both AND use a GoogleMap Widget to make the map.
Let’s start with an ALMOST blank page. Click on the Add Page icon in the bottom left corner of the Tool Palette. This brings up the dialog for choosing a theme. It will default to the same theme as your Welcome page, but you can choose another theme if you want. I’ll choose the “blank” page from the Modern Theme. It’s not really blank though.
Let’s add another picture over the one that’s there. It’s a cool graphic element. Pick almost any picture at all that has the same theme as the page. It doesn’t even have to be that good of a picture. Drag it to the small strip of image on the “blank page.” Then click on it to get the “Edit Mask” display. Then click the “Edit Mask” button. Make sure that you move your cursor so that it turns into a “hand” icon. If it’s over the image and it’s still an “arrow” then you’ll just move the small text box for the word “Text” that’s sitting on top of the image. Drag your image around so the most interesting part is in the narrow “window.” To get out of the “Edit Mask” mode, just click somewhere else on the page, away from the image. Then click on the text box on top and select it to change the text to “Practice Schedule.” Change the color and size if you want or drag it to a better location on the picture. All of this will be similar to the way we did it on the Welcome page.
Now, let’s add some text to tell when the practices are. To do that, just click the Text Box icon in the Tool Palette at the bottom of the application window (Not the Fonts icon.) When you click this button, a small square will appear exactly in the middle of your web page. It may be hard to see and it will have a blinking text cursor in the top left corner. If you start typing, if will fill the box. I typed the date, location and time of the practice, but it’s in kind of a vertical box that’s not easy to read. To make all the text appear on a single line, click away from the text box, then click back on one of the “handles” of the text box and stretch it out horizontally. Also, click on the handles to make the vertical size of the text box be just big enough for the text. If you don’t like the default grey text color, select your text inside the text box and change the color using either the Inspector Tool or the Color Tool in the Tool Palette. I’ll make mine a nice legible black color – middle aged people are going to have to read this!
I want to have multiple practice dates. The easiest way to do this is not to keep making text boxes from scratch, but to DUPLICATE what we already have and just change the small amount of text in each of the duplicates that is different from one practice to the next. Duplicating is easy. Select the text box and use the keyboard shortcut: command-D. This makes a new copy of your text box and offsets it just a little from your original. Don’t make tons of duplicates yet. Just one. Now drag your duplicate down under the first version and slide it over a little to the left until you get a little “centering” line and your duplicate kind of magnetically lines up with the first version. NOW if you make additional duplicates, they will have the SAME offset and be beautifully lined up and spaced apart! Make about a dozen of them then go into each text box and change the dates and times if you have to.
To add the Google Map of the field site, click on the Widget button in the top right corner of the application window (the top of the Media Browser). Drag the Google Maps Widget from the Media Browser to a spot underneath your text for the practice schedule. As you drag the Widget onto your page, it becomes a map (to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino!).
There will also be a small display above the map where you can type in the location of your practice field. When you are done, you can zoom and pan the map the way you want – to best show surrounding roads – and resize the map on your page. Pretty cool!
Now you’ve got two pages done. Just remember to go to the Site area in the upper left corner and rename your “Blank” webpage to “Practice Schedule,” then publish the same way you did with your Welcome page. Your Welcome page automatically includes a navigation button to your Practice Schedule page and vice versa. Now, experiment with more pages and ways to use text, photos, video, audio and Widgets!

I agree. A comment should say more than just great post. In fact, why would you say great post without explaining your reason behind your words? Why not back up what you’re saying and get people to interact with that? If you’re going to leave a comment it’s because you want to express how you feel to the author of the post and to whomever may read your comment and decide to add on to it further.
