Fun iWeb Projects Using Widgets
New improved iWeb makes creating web pages a blast with special features.
So let’s get down to building our Little League site. The first step after launching iWeb is to create a page by choosing a template. You can build your site – with multiple pages – over time, so you only need to make a Welcome Page for now. It’s easy to change these as you go and as your site develops, so have no fear! Just DO something. Pick a page theme or template. I like White and Modern, but there are a lot to choose from. You can have each page have a different theme, but to have a cohesive look, pick a theme and stick with the variations on that theme for subsequent pages. I chose the Modern Welcome Page theme for my first page.
So, you probably don’t want a picture of two strangers on your website, so let’s start with replacing that photo with one of your own. Click on the Photo button in the Media Browser pane to the right. That will give you access to your iPhoto Library – including movies – and your PhotoBooth pictures. My kids LOVE PhotoBooth and you can have a lot of fun with it, if you’ve never tried it. So navigate your iPhoto folders and find a picture you want to try for your main Welcome image. Don’t worry. You can change it at ANY time, so just pick a shot, drag it from the Media Browser and drop it on top of the stock photo in the Welcome Page. It will replace one with the other.
But let’s say that the stock image was a landscape orientation and the image you dragged was a portrait orientation (vertical instead of horizontal). What you end up with is probably an image with someone’s head cut off. Don’t panic. Just click on the photo in the webpage and you’ll get a small floating display that says “Edit Mask.”
Click on the “Edit Mask” button and you’ll be able to see your entire image within the “window” of the photo shape. Click and drag the image so that the part you want to see is visible inside the window. You can also use the slider to change the size of the image. Remember, though, that the image can be resized smaller than the “frame” of the photo. If you want a smaller image, then click away from the image to turn off the “Edit Mask” display, and then click back on the image in the webpage. Now you can use the small white “handles” in the corners to shrink the overall size of the image. Or hold down the command key to use the handles to rotate the image.
Next you may want to change the color and text of the “Welcome to My Site” message to stand out better against your picture. Click on it to select it, then type your new message. I’ll use “Welcome to the Red Sox.” Now, I have part of the text hanging over onto the white page, so it’s difficult to read the white text. So down in the tool palette at the bottom of the screen, with the text still selected, choose Color to call up a Color Picker. By clicking on the little magnifying glass icon at the top of the Color Picker, you can choose a color from anywhere on the screen. I’ll grab the color of the player’s red t-shirt collar. If the size of the text is too small for you, select the text and hit command (+) a few times. To shrink it, use command (-). (That’s holding down the command button and tapping the + or – key, near the delete key.)
To move the text, click away from the text – anywhere – then back on the text. Now you can drag it anywhere on the screen.
Then, since Latin is probably not your first language, you’ll probably want to replace the “lorem ipsum” filler text with your own pearls of wisdom. Double-click on that text to select it and start typing. Or if you’re the thoughtful type, you can write it all out in a wordprocessing program first and then copy and paste the text. Start using keyboard shortcuts, if you don’t already. After you select the text in your wordprocessor, hit cmd-C to copy, then when you have the “lorem ipsum” filler text selected on your web page, hit cmd-V to paste. You can also change the font of the text by selecting it (highlighting it in blue) and choosing Fonts from the tool palette at the bottom of the screen. You can also change the color as we did with the headline text, or change the way the text is laid out using the Inspector tool to change things like whether the text is justified right, left or center or how spread out the lines of text are.
If you wanted to publish this single page to the web, you need to have either a MobileMe account ($99 a year from the Apple web store) or your own ftp account (which is how you upload web pages to be viewed on the web).
Click on the word “Site” on the far left side of the screen. This will call up a dialog box that looks like this:
Next to “Publish to:” is a pulldown menu allowing you to Publish your web site to your MobileMe account, an ftp site, or even a folder on your computer. MobileMe is the most foolproof method of publishing, so if you have an account, choose this option. If you’re a hardcore web dude, then go with ftp – and you can probably handle the rest of the instructions yourself. Or if you want to be able to access your web page on your computer and nowhere else, like for a school project, then choose Local Folder. The Local Folder option is also used if you want to link it to a website that you already have.
With the MobileMe option chosen, we want to change the Site name. Currently your site is called … “Site.” Change it to REDSOX or something like that. Provide a contact email. You can also use this dialog box to choose to make the website public – so anyone in the whole world can see it – or private, allowing you to hand select the people who have access by only emailing invitations to see your website to your friends and family who will need a username and password to access your webpages. This is often a good idea if your site – like a Little League site – provides access to photos and contact information for children.
To Publish your site, click on the icon in the Publish Site Tool Palette at the bottom of the screen. It will take a minute to upload. At the end of the process, you will get a dialog box that shows you the URL (web location) of your site and allows you to send out emails announcing your site. You can also choose to visit your site, so you can see what it looks like. You should check your site in a couple of different web browsers, like Safari, Firefox and Explorer.

If you are a webmaster hard-core, then consider iWeb for quick and dirty Web sites that you do not want to spend much effort on. I also have Dreamweaver (a workhorse of the industry standard web design), and many things become iWeb me where I want to be much faster - and it’s fun!

I agree. A comment should say more than just great post. In fact, why would you say great post without explaining your reason behind your words? Why not back up what you’re saying and get people to interact with that? If you’re going to leave a comment it’s because you want to express how you feel to the author of the post and to whomever may read your comment and decide to add on to it further.
